Öykü Potuoğlu-Cook is a Ph.D. candidate in Performance Studies at Northwestern University. In her dissertation project, a historical ethnography of contemporary Turkey, she deploys belly dance praxis to chart processes of urban and national entitlement vis-à-vis changing gender relations and religious, ethnic, and class distinctions.
For her field research, Potuoğlu-Cook performed as a
professional belly dancer across multiple Istanbul venues. In addition to directing dance theater productions, she continues to choreograph and perform in Turkish and Egyptian belly dance styles.
