UMBC INTRAMURAL
OUTDOOR SAND VOLLEYBALL RULES

**NO CURRENT VARSITY VOLLEYBALL ATHLETES PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE**
**NO MORE THAN ONE FORMER INTERCOLLEGIATE (4-YEAR OR JUNIOR COLLEGE)
VARSITY VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS ON A TEAM**
Participants must be at least one full calendar year removed from the start of their last season of
participating in Varsity competition in order to be eligible for intramural play.

Club team members must participate in the most competitive division available.

• Tournament format will be determined by the Tournament Director.

• All matches will consist of best 2 of 3 games to 25 points (third game to 15 if necessary). All games will be rally scoring, win by 2 with a cap at 27. Playoffs and championship match will be the same format.

• The team winning the coin toss will have two options. They can either choose a specific side or elect to serve first. The other team will receive the remaining option. For the second game the teams will switch sides and the team that didn’t serve first will now do so. If a third game is necessary then a second coin toss will take place, with the winning team having the same options as before. In the third game teams will change sides every 8 points.

• You must have two players on the court to play a game. In coed play, at least one of the players must be a female. A maximum of four players are allowed on the court at any one time. In coed play, if four players are being used then a minimum of two of them must be a female.

• In coed play, when the ball is played more than once by a team, at least one of the contacts must be made by a female player. Contact of the ball during blocking shall not constitute playing the ball.

• You may set the ball over the net only if your shoulders are square (either forward or backward) to where the ball is going. (This includes any of the three hits on your side)

• Players are to call their own infractions. A supervisor will be present to aid in a dispute, but we will rely much on the honor system for this tournament.

**Intramural Volleyball Rules are based on USA Volleyball Rules. Any situation not covered in the Intramural Volleyball Rules Sheet shall be judged according to Official USA Volleyball Rules**
