UMBC INTRAMURAL
WIFFLE BALL RULES

• Each game will consist of seven (7) innings with three (3) outs an inning or 45 minutes from scheduled game time. Games can end in a tie.
• Teams may start the game with a minimum of four (4) players with a maximum of six (6) in the field of play (including the catcher.) For coed, two (2) female players must be in the field at all times. Teams may use an extra hitter (EH) in their lineup to bring their total number of batters to 7.
• Ten (10) run inning rule (first four innings)
o When the batting team scores their tenth run of the inning, regardless of number of outs, they will automatically go out to the field. *Exceptions:
o 10 plus runs scoring via a home run which clears the bases.
o If a team is behind, they may score runs until they lead by ten (10) runs.
• Fifteen (15) run mercy rule (after 4 ½ innings)
o If visiting team is ahead, home team will bat in bottom half.
• Teams will pitch to their own batters.
o The pitcher must not interfere with the ball or impede a defensive player from making a play, the batter shall be called out, and all runners will return to their original bases. If in umpire’s judgment, the offensive team gains an advantage by the interference, he may impose a harsher penalty that in his judgment is fair. (EX. pitcher interferes, breaking up a potential double play, umpire may call two outs and return other runners) Any batted ball which strikes the pitcher becomes an immediate dead ball, the batter is called out and all runners return to their original bases.
o The pitcher throws a total of three (3) pitches. If the batter does not put a pitch in play after the three (3) pitches they will be called out.
o The pitcher must raise the ball over his head before pitching, so the defense can be set.
• Team MUST have player positioned at catcher.
• All other players may position themselves anywhere in fair territory as the team sees fit.
• Teams will be provided bats and balls. No personal equipment or gloves.
• No stealing. Runner(s) are allowed to leave the base after the ball is struck by the bat. If a runner leaves to soon, the runner is out (dead ball).
• No bunting. Only full swings permitted.
• No sliding or diving into a base. If this occurs the runner is out.
• No sliding or diving to tag a runner. If this occurs, the runner is awarded two bases from the last base touched.
• No running deliberately into a fielder attempting a tag. If done, runner is out. Malicious contact will result in an immediate ejection.
• Pitcher’s Poison - A designated area will be taped out for ‘pitcher’s poison.’ ‘Pitcher’s Poison’ is only in effect at plays for plays at first base. The fielding player must have both feet in the designated area with complete control of the ball for the runner to be considered out.
• No throwing the ball at the base runner. If occurs, the runner will be awarded one extra base.
• If the batted ball hits a light fixture or anything else connected to the ceiling the ball is considered in fair territory unless the ball lands in foul territory.
• Any ball striking any banner or flag, or the railing surrounding the Cardio Balcony is considered in play, but is to be considered as having struck the ground if the ball comes down into the playing field; (i.e. the batter is not out if ball is caught). If the ball strikes any of the previously mentioned areas, and goes on to land on the Cardio Balcony, a home run will be awarded. Any batted ball that lands on the Cardio Balcony in fair territory, or the facade overhanging the Cardio Balcony in fair territory, will be considered a home run.
• If a ball is interfered with by a spectator on the Cardio balcony the player will be awarded a ground rule double unless decided upon by the umpire.
• Infield fly rule is in effect.
• Throwing the bat; 1st time - warning, 2nd time - batter out and may be ejected.
• Appeal Plays - You may appeal a play to the umpire.
