Making Master Teachers in Baltimore County

The Center for History Education (CHE) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Baltimore County Public Schools have been awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Teaching American History Grant Program.  Over the next three years, the program will enable 30 elementary, middle, and high school teachers from Baltimore County to become Master Teachers for their school system. The professional development program will include:

  • Graduate-level Summer Institutes
  • Saturday workshops during the school year
  • Publication of their American History lesson plans and other materials
  • Learning how to mentor and support other teachers
  • Continuous support and resources from partner historical institutions and organizations

Year One of the program will focus on reading and research, Year Two will focus on incorporating primary sources in the classroom, and Year Three will focus on historical writing.

The other program partners are the Maryland State Archives, Martha Ross Center for Oral History at UMBC, and the Maryland Historical Society.
