CHE Participants Present Sessions at the Maryland Council for the Social Studies Fall Conference
On October 20th, a number of current and former CHE-TAH participants presented sessions at the Maryland Council for the Social Studies (MDCSS) Fall Conference at Liberty High School in Carroll County:
-Mary Davis, Teaching History in Anne Arundel County master teacher, and participant Georgia Ladd presented "Preposterous? Teaching Elementary Students with Primary Documents."
-Tina Nelson, lead elementary master teacher in the Making American History in Baltimore County Program, hosted a session entitled "My Kids Can Do That: Primary Sources with Struggling Readers."
-K. Wise Whitehead and Yvonne Waller from the TAH program in Baltimore City Program conducted a session on interpreting the modern Civil Rights movement.
Leah Renzi, Jermaine Ellerbe, Phil Bressler, Jennifer Connolly, Charla Helmers, and Corjie Tarlton, alums and current participants in the Teaching American History in Maryland Program, also presented sessions as well.
Each session was an exciting, hands-on experience that explained how various primary sources can be incorporated into the classroom with students of all ages. The teachers also touched on some of the frustrations and fears associated with using primary documents and how to overcome these obstacles.
