One of the first women to graduate as a UMBC Cybersecurity Scholar, Lauren has had rich experiences representing her program and advocating for the elimination of achievement gaps for women and minorities in STEM education nationally. She also had plenty of hands-on learning opportunities, such as interning at the Department of Defense—where she was the only intern to receive an award for excellence—and working as an IT security technician on campus. In her last semester she was captain of a UMBC team that competed in the Maryland Cyber Challenge, taking second place. She will soon be working as a software engineer at Northrop Grumman, while simultaneously earning her master’s degree in computer science at UMBC, on her way to a Ph.D.
