Martin is an army sergeant who has spent the past decade in military service. He joined the UMBC social work program at the Universities at Shady Grove in fall 2011, but his enrollment was cut short by a redeployment to Afghanistan the following year. After finishing his tour he returned to campus determined to complete his degree. Martin has received notable recognition for his work in the military and in the classroom, including a Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan and UMBC Student Leadership Award. He was featured as a guest speaker at USM Chancellor Brit Kirwan's retirement gala this spring. He is currently interning with Our House, a residential program to help adolescent boys prepare for entering the workforce, where he uses his experience balancing school, work, family, and his responsibilities to the Army to educate and motivate at-risk youth.
