"UMBC has let me evolve past my declared majors into a field of teaching, research, and international learning. Working as a peer assistant, writing fellow, fencing treasurer, and resident assistant has allowed me to shape the experiences of many other students at UMBC. That feeling of truly holding significance at a university has been UMBC's best gift to this hopeful engineer."

As a shy freshman, Stephen never imagined that he would one day have the opportunity to teach college students in another country. At UMBC, he found the confidence and freedom to explore new experiences, like joining the fencing team, studying abroad in Wales, and traveling around the United Kingdom as a collegiate archer. Energized by his year abroad, Stephen returned to UMBC with a passion for helping his fellow students follow their dreams. As a resident assistant, writing fellow, and peer assistant in UMBC's study abroad office, he has worked tirelessly to make an impact on campus. During his upcoming year in Poland, he will both teach English to STEM students in a university setting and also pursue graduate research in ocean energy technologies.
