“I came to UMBC looking to be prepared for a graduate school program and be myself. Not only has my goal been reached, but I feel prepared to excel at the University of Michigan because of my experiences here.”
Plans: Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, University of Michigan
B.S., Chemical Engineering

Stephen has no doubt that his choice to enroll at UMBC as a Meyerhoff Scholar was the right one. At UMBC he gained confidence in his ability to tackle problems from different directions, and he looks forward to keeping up with his Meyerhoff cohort for years to come. Stephen did research in Dr. Mariajose Castellanos’ biochemical engineering lab at UMBC and during the summer in labs at North Carolina State University, Yale, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was named to two honor societies, serving as vice president of one. In graduate school, he plans to focus on molecular dynamic simulations to improve the fundamental understanding of real world systems, such as alphaltene formation in crude oils. His ultimate goal is to become a professor at a research university.
