Vanessa came to UMBC as a Meyerhoff Scholar and flourished in the program. She excelled academically and also helped strengthen engineering education at UMBC. She was actively involved in establishing the UMBC chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society, and she served as the secretary of both the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers campus organization. As a tutor for math, science, and engineering courses, and a teaching fellow for the introductory engineering course, she helped other students master challenging material. She diligently prepared for her discussion sessions with students and offered extra review sessions, earning her students’ respect both for her engineering ability and for her patience as a teacher.
