Dawn Norfleet
is an ethnomusicologist hailing from Los Angeles,
California. She received her doctorate in musicology with a
specialization in African American music, and an M.A. in
musical composition. Both degrees were earned at Columbia
University. She is also a performing flautist, jazz
vocalist, and composer in New York City. Her dissertation is
entitled, "Hip-hop Culture in New York City: the Role of
Verbal Musical Performance in Defining a Community."
