Cheryl L. Keyes is Associate Professor of
Ethnomusicology at the University of California at Los Angeles. She specializes in popular
culture and African American music. Keyes has conducted extensive fieldwork on rap music
and hip-hop culture in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, and London.
She is the author of Rap Music
and Street Consciousness (University of Illinois, in press).
