Riley Lee began shakuhachi in Japan in 1970, and began
wadaiko (和太鼓) in 1973 with the group now called Kodô (鼓童).
In 1980,
he became the first non-Japanese shakuhachi dai shihan
(Grand Master). He studied with Sakai Chikuho II and
with Yokoyama Katsuya. Riley has a PhD (ethnomusicology, University of Sydney 1992), and a MA and BA (ethnomusicology, University of Hawai'i 1986 and 1983). He performs, teaches and lectures extensively worldwide and has released over 50 recordings. In April 2005, he premiered Australian composer Ross Edward’s shakuhachi concerto, “The Heart of Night” with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. |
