Performances. Kâni Karaca sings the Naat ("Music of the Whirling Dervishes," Atlantic CD 7 82493-2).  Niyazi Sayın performs the ney improvisation; the ensemble directed by Ulvî Erguner performs the peşrev ("Mevlâna: Beyâti Mevlevî Âyini," Aras LP 21005).

Researcher. I base most of the observations and opinions of this paper on my research as a participant-observer in Turkey during a specific period of time and much reflection since. I studied ney with Akagündüz Kutbay as one aspect of my study of Turkish classical and Sufi music (1970—1972).  I performed on the ney at the Mevlana Festival in Konya (1971) and on the United States tour of a Mevlevi ensemble led by a Ulvi Erguner (1972). Although specific circumstances of public Mevlevi performances vary, the problem of ambiguous words remains.
