Sheldon Caplis is Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is responsible for fund raising, alumni relations, marketing and public relations at the University which recently completed a seven-year, $66 million fund raising campaign (goal was $50 million). Prior to joining UMBC, Caplis served at the University of Baltimore in positions including Vice President for Institutional Advancement (1987-1993), Vice President for Development (1982-1987), and Associate Professor (adjunct) in the Merrick School of Business (1973-1993). He is accredited as a Certified Fund Raising Executive and has given fund raising lectures at conferences for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the National Society for Fund Raising Executives, as well as for the Goucher College fund raising certificate program. Caplis was also a presenter at the 2000, 2001, and 2002 Harvard Seminar for New Presidents in Cambridge, MA. As a community leader, Caplis served on the board of directors for Communities in Schools (co-chair) and currently serves on the board of Hillel of Greater Baltimore, the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce, and the Maryland Business Roundtable. He received his B.S. from the University of Baltimore and his M.B.A. from Morgan State University.
