TechGuard Security® NAMED MARYLAND
BEST IT INCUBATOR COMPANY OF THE YEAR

A techcenter@UMBC success story

Baltimore, MD, (June 10, 2005) – TechGuard Security, LLC, a provider of adaptive information technology solutions and maker of the Great Walls of Fire ® network security appliances, announced today that it has been awarded the 2005 IT Incubator Company of the Year award in the fifth annual Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards. The awards recognize the achievements of current and graduate companies within Maryland 's technology incubators.

TechGuard was selected from among companies located at 16 Maryland incubator sites statewide, based on a number of factors including:

  • Success in achieving its objectives; in its technology or product development
  • Growth in revenue or earnings
  • Number of customers and significant customers
  • Technology transfer
  • Attraction of outside investors
  • Impact on the region

TechGuard was established in February 2000 to create proactive network security solutions for US Cyber Defense and Critical Infrastructure security. TechGuard's original location is in the St. Louis Enterprise Center , a Missouri incubator program. TechGuard selected Maryland as the place to open an office to better serve its primary client, the Department of Defense. Already a participant in the Missouri incubator program, and not yet a profitable company, TechGuard applied for space at the techcenter@UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and was greeted with remarkable incubator resources and business development support from the state of Maryland.

“Establishing our Washington presence at the UMBC techcenter was the best move we could have made resulting in achieving profitability at the end of 2004 and securing the lead developer role on the J-UCAS Integrator-broker contract under JHU/APL ,” said Suzanne Joyce , CEO and President of TechGuard Security. “UMBC's technology incubator program provided the support TechGuard needed including opportunities for co-development and technology transfer with the University of Maryland Baltimore County; introductions to local banks and investors; and meetings with the NSA and other target clients. As a new and growing company, we owe much to UMBC's technology incubator program and their extensive assistance and the State of Maryland's support for technological innovation.”

"We are pleased TechGuard Security received recognition for their outstanding achievements in the Information Technology field," says Walter Schulz, director of techcenter@UMBC. "We are proud TechGuard is in our program - they exemplify the caliber of techcenter@UMBC companies."

TechGuard's resear ch and development is supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program (ATP) to pursue research and development of TechGuard's patented artificial intelligence firewall. TechGuard has been proposed as a new protégé by Booz Allen Hamilton for t he Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Mentor-Protégé Program.
