- New Company - Blue Wave Semiconductors, Inc. Blue Wave is a high-tech start-up involved with optoelectronic materials and devices with initial focus on the ultraviolet spectrum. The company has acquired a license with the University of Maryland on advanced semiconductor materials and devices for detection and monitoring of ultraviolet light. Blue Wave has won an SBIR Phase II award in the amount of $500,000 for the commercialization of UV detector technology. - New Company - Aurora Analytics. Aurora is focused on the development and manufacture of innovative consumer and research diagnostic products based on a proprietary amine modification/detection technology. Aurora aims to be the first company to provide a non-enzymatic, on-site test for the presence of amines in food products as an effective indicator of food freshness. With the strategic product benefits of sensitivity, rapid results, ease of use and low-cost, Aurora will first target seafood processors and inspectors followed by the butcher, grocery chain, restaurants and home use markets. - COLUMBIA Technologies, LLC, a nationally recognized leader in assessing Vapor Intrusion of contaminants into buildings, has recently completed a major project for the EPA on the impacts of vapors from a dry cleaner into adjacent buildings. "We deployed several state of the art technologies that can quickly and effectively assess this problem for residential and commercial properties", said Ned Tillman, president of the firm. Vapor intrusion has become one of the larger concerns in assessing health risks in properties around gasoline stations, dry cleaners and other properties where fuels and chemicals are stored. - COLUMBIA Technologies, LLC has been invited to speak at the 2004 Annual Petroleum Hydrocarbon Conference, sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute and the National Ground Water Association. The Conference will be held in Baltimore on August 17 and 18, 2004. The focus of the conference is on the prevention, detection and cleanup of fuels and oxygenates such as MTBE. This is a timely conference since there is such a concern over the MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether is a gasoline additive) leak that is contaminating drinking water wells in Harford County near Fallston. COLUMBIA Technologies is a nationally recognized expert in the detection and mapping of MTBE in soils and ground water. They are presenting the following two papers, which will summarize the improvements they have created in the ability to detect and map out the location of these contaminants so they can be cleaned up more effectively. - New Company - AVIcode, Inc. AVIcode is a leading developer of enterprise application performance and fault management software. - The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship Speaker Series will be held on September 20, 2004. Guest speaker Dennis Hightower will discuss "Intrapreneurship and Innovation" . - The Center for Women and Information Technology (CWIT) is partnering with Women in Bio to present a talk by best-selling writer Dr. Deborah Tannen. Dr. Tannen is the author of 19 books, including You Just Don't Understand, which deals with gender differences in communication style and was on the NY Times Best Seller list for four years. - 5523 Research Park Drive - bwtech@UMBC is a 41-acre research and technology community being developed by the international commercial real estate firm Grosvenor in collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). bwtech@UMBC has a total development capacity of up to 330,000 square feet of office and laboratory space. The park will ultimately comprise five new state-of-the-art buildings occupied by research and technology firms. These firms have access to the resources and potential employee base at UMBC. In 2001, Grosvenor delivered the 62,000 square foot three-story building at 5521 Research Park Drive, now fully occupied by RWD Technologies. - Biochemical Regulatory Engineering Program Track - UMBC is the only academic institution in Maryland, and one of a few in the world, to offer comprehensive training programs in the areas of regulatory affairs for biotechnology. Among these, UMBC offers a unique graduate certificate program in Biochemical Regulatory Engineering. This 4-course, 12-credit sequence provides participants with an in-depth exposure to key areas associated with bringing a biological product to the market under FDA approval. These include the regulatory approval process for biological products, compliance with the current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), quality control and quality assurance for biotechnology products (Fall Offering), and design and validation of GMP biotechnology facilities. Noncredit students will be awarded 18 CEU's; credit students will earn 12 semester hours of credit, and both will receive a Certificate of Completion. - The Department of Music's Faculty Recital Series presents Ruckus, the contemporary music ensemble in residence at UMBC, in a program honoring composer Stuart Saunders Smith's 30 years at UMBC. Featured works will include Bones, Further Than Now, In Bingham, Family Portrait: Self, Aussie Blue, Part, Tunnels and the world premiere of Hearts, a solo violin work to be performed by Airi Yoshioka. Founded in 2000 to promote the performance of contemporary chamber music, Ruckus has performed at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and at universities throughout the East Coast. 8 pm, Fine Arts Recital Hall. $7 general admission, $3 seniors, free for students, free with a UMBC ID. - The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents A Thousand Hounds: A Walk with the Dogs Through the History of Photography. Over 120 photographic works illustrate the history of photography from the 1840s to the present using dogs to tell the story. The images speak as much about the evolving relationship between humans and dogs as they do about the history and concerns of the photographic medium. In addition to its historical focus, the exhibit has been organized around a variety of themes including the dog's heroic familial and societal relationships and the exploration of the dog's love, loyalty, inner peace and inexhaustible energy. The show includes memorable images by known photographers and artists as well as lesser known images that have never appeared in print or in public exhibitions. Featured artists in this exhibition include William Wegman, Elliott Erwitt, Andy Warhol, Larry Clark, Ralph Gibson, Sally Mann, and Eric Fischl. A Thousand Hounds is organized by the Cygnet Foundation and is curated by Ray Merritt and Miles Barth. The local presentation of the exhibition is generously funded by the Maryland State Arts Council and the through Friday, 12 noon to 4:30 pm, on Thursday until 8 pm, and Saturday 1 - 5 pm. - The Department of Theatre presents Action, a rarely performed play by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and film actor by Sam Shepard, directed by Colette Searls. Action takes you right into the living room of a post-apocalyptic holiday. Liza, Lupe, Jeep and Shooter are trapped in a cold, isolated cabin after a mysterious "crisis". Time has passed since the days of mass-media and indoor plumbing and they are struggling to pull off a holiday meal. Limited food, an uncertain future and overwhelming boredom begin to take their toll with disturbing and absurd results. In this hilarious marriage between the realistic and bizarre, Shepard offers a stirring look at the unplugged American mind. All performances will be held in the UMBC Theatre. Admission: $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors, $3 for the preview. Ticket proceeds benefit the Department of Theatre Scholarship Fund.
