Karl Signell is perhaps best known for his publications in Turkish music, especially Makam: Modal practice in Turkish art music. He has done extensive field research in the U.S. and in more than a dozen countries abroad, including Turkey, Indonesia, and Japan.

Besides editing EOL, his multimedia projects include other Web sites, CDs, CD-ROMs, and audio documentaries such as The Nature of Music series and Music in a new world: America's ethnic traditions series.
