Techpreneurs," was jointly offered by UMBC and the Howard
County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA). The program was

of doing business. Offered in the Fall of 2001, SMARTbasics provided

Symposiums and Lecture Series
A Look Ahead: Futures in Biomedical Research
UMBC's
annual scientific symposium, A Look Ahead, is a one-day conference
focusing on the future of research in the biomedical industry.
This symposium was first presented in 1997 in honor of Becton
Dickinson's 100th Anniversary. Each year the event is attended
by over 250 scientists, educators and biotechnology business leaders.

Visionaries in IT
The
Forum for Visionaries in Information Technology was established
to help elevate the prominence and recognition of Maryland as
a central hub for information and emerging technologies. The forum
is designed as an annual four-part breakfast series. The first
three breakfasts each year feature remarks from an IT visionary--an
individual recognized regionally or nationally for contributions
to revolutionizing business practices through information technology
and innovation. A fourth breakfast provides perspective and an
economic outlook on the IT community of the Baltimore/Washington
region.
Business professionals, research scientists and UMBC students
and faculty are motivated to attend by the opportunity to network
with companies, learn about trends and technologies and better
understand the business needs of the Greater Baltimore/Washington
region. The forum drew over 1,000 attendees in 2002. For more
details about Visionaries in IT, visit

Speaker Series
The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship's Speaker Series provides
a monthly platform for successful entrepreneurs to candidly share
their experiences and insights with UMBC students, faculty, staff,
alumni and the business community. The series highlights experiences,
lessons learned and unique issues and challenges faced by technology
entrepreneurs in the creation of a new enterprise. Visit the Entrepreneurship
Speaker Series Web site at www.umbc.edu/entrepreneurship/speakers.html for the latest schedule.
