"UMBC's thriving incubator program and technology park, outstanding research capabilities and strong relationships with the corporate sector make it the ideal environment for technology development and commercialization."
Stephen Auvil, Director
UMBC Office of Technology Development |
UMBC is a top tier research institution that spends over $36 million
each year supporting approximately 600 full-time faculty performing
a variety of research with significant components in math and
the sciences. The majority of this research is funded by federal
grants; however, a growing portion is supported by industry through
corporate sponsored research. UMBC encourages the formation of
collaborations between its faculty and companies for collaborative
research, sponsored research and consulting.
Research often results in the making of an invention that may
have commercial value. The Center's staff facilitates collaboration
between tech center companies and the University's Office of Technology
Development (OTD). UMBC's OTD evaluates such inventions, files
for patents when appropriate and licenses technologies to companies
interested in developing licensed products.
UMBC's Business Advisory Services for Entrepreneurs (BASE) Program
provides a means for entrepreneurs to obtain sage business advice
on how to launch a new venture. The BASE Program is for faculty,
students or anyone interested in starting a technology-based company.
